About PULSE@PARKES
PULsar Student Explorations at Parkes
Pulse@Parkes is a new initiative that brings together school students and professional research astronomers in to a project centred around a current hot topic in science. Under the guidance of the ATNF astronomers, students will get the opportunity to control the famous Parkes telescope with modern remote observing technology. The focus of the students observations, will the be post-supernova remnants of dead stars, known as pulsars. What makes this project so unique, is that the data collected by the students can be used by the astronomers for real research. Of particular interest to the ATNF, is using the data to track the evolution of the pulsars over the lifetime of the project. Pulse@Parkes is among the first projects in the CSIRO and Australia, to bring school students and professional astronomers together for real research.
